The winners of the
World Port Hackathon 2017

Dock Tech #1 & SmartPort Prize
Dock Tech build a prototype that provides insight in the right moments for dredging the waterways. Various data sources like schedules and depth information are combined into a single overview. The solution includes an algorithm that enhances the resolution and creates forecasts through combining low-res crowd-sourced depth measurements.

Strawberry #2
Strawberry created a solution that caters for the transition towards autonomous shipping. Manned and unmanned vessels can coordinate their journey in the port and on the waterways in a safe way!

N^2 – LaunchLab and PortXL prize
N^2 created a demonstrator that provides insights in the way various networks are intertwined. The connectedness, the dependency and the potential impact of a disruption are visualized on maps, and over time.

MariTimeSeries – Discovery Day
MariTimeSeries developed a platform to share data within the supply chain! Containers and the documents are shared and this allows for better efficiency and less CO2 footprint.

De Biggetjes – Discovery Day
De biggetjes build a solution that predicts where incidents occur and optimizes the officer positions on (expected) events. In this way an average time of 6.5 minutes can be saved, which are crucial minutes in incident management.

Care Bears – Discovery Day
Care Bears build a solution for social travel. Citizens get insight in the different options and consequences for the city as a whole when choosing a specific trip. They will be rewarded for choices that contribute to the overall improvement of the city.

Qquest – Discovery Day
Creating transparancy in the demand for data
Our solution communicates how well (or bad) a relevant supply chain performs, in terms of providing data whenever it is requested. Each party involved can see their own average performance, and that of other parties involved. This transparancy motivates them to provide the missing data, or to address another party involved to do so. If the data is not deliverd, customers get dissatisfied and eventually choose another company: a party that can actually answer their demands.

Searoutes – Discovery Day
Searoutes developed a tool that provides insight in the actual usage of tugboats based on the AIS. It provides the skipper with insight how they can save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions.

THE 5th WORLD PORT HACKATHON
After four successful editions of the World Port Hackathon, it is time to celebrate our fifth anniversary! 24 hours of vibrant energy, innovation, collaboration and above all fun will again be present in the fifth edition of the World Port Hackathon! This year, the first World Port Hackathon Conference is being organised to test the limits of innovation and get even more inspired.
THE WORLD PORT CONFERENCE
The WPH2017 will start with a World Port Hackathon Conference. The Conference offers our partners the possibility to connect perspectives, share knowledge, and explore opportunities together with the hackers. Inspire and be inspired!
FEEL THE ENERGY
The World Port Hackathon & Conference is the place where talented people, emerging technologies and experts from the port community collaborate and share their passion. We provide the platform on which to develop promising ideas. Take a look at the previous editions to feel the energy!
The venue of the #WPH2017 is UNESCO World Heritage listed The van Nelle Fabriek.

Level up… World Port Hackathon 2017 Challenges
Do more with less: that’s the challenge for the coming years! Within the port, extensive logistic systems, networks and operations have been created over time. We have created vast infrastructures where growth has been the main driver of change. We use many resources which are not sustainable in the long term. The real challenge: we need to improve current systems to make them sustainable in the broadest sense. The right insights are required to foster ‘smart’ port activities.
Data, technology: we have it all. We are looking for people with the knowledge and mind-set to collaboratively crack this puzzle.
I see lots of creative people, I see people with lots of energy, putting up creative ideas not being afraid to challenge the way things are currently done.

It is an era of change, every organisation is going to search for the limits to be more efficient and more sustainable.

Just to sit here at the World Port Hackathon and think about problems for once was really fun!

At the WPH we are looking for possibilities to provide nautical information in an easy system for navigational purposes in our port.

We came up with 4 ideas last 24-hours. We didn’t really know the port world until 24-hours ago. So that’s why it took us a few ideas to iterate on something that is truly unique.

If you want to compete and accel in ports, collaboration is key. Eventually, it is the right scene that provides the right innovations.

The World Port Hackathon drives change in the whole industry.

If we work together as a port sector, as a maritime sector, we can achieve some steps in the right direction and contribute to a better environment.

What we try to do at the Hackathon is to bring all those young, bright, enthusiastic people into contact with the complex port environment that they do not know.

I like to learn what all the teams have been building, there is a huge diversity of the teams participating in the Hackathon. Let’s build new relationships.

Before the World Port Hackathon I had a little chat about possible ideas and on the Hackathon, we actually kind of make it work!

We believe that these young people at the WPH have the skills to challenge us to do good stuff, especially in proving how technology can help the logistic processes.

24-hours ago we knew nothing about ports, and the port of Rotterdam. Now we built something that people who have worked here for years might actually find useful, and that’s amazing!
